Source Water Protection Area are polygon features that represent protection zones as delineated for the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority Source Water Protection Plan, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Source Water Protection Zones A, B, and C were delineated using the DEP Source Water Assessment and Protection guidence document. Source Water Protection Zone A is an area 0.25 miles on either side of the stream. Zone A extends between an upstream point that represents, on average, a 5-hour time-of-travel to the intake and a downstream point that is 0.25 miles below the intake. Source Water Protection Zone B is a two-mile-wide area on either side of the stream from an upstream location that represents a 25-hour time-of-travel to the intake . Source Water Protection Zone C is the remainder of the watershed for watersheds with areas 100 square miles or greater.
Wellhead Protection Zone I: The source water protection Zone I is the smallest of the three zones and is also the most stringent from a protection standpoint. Zone I is a circle around the well with a radius of 400 feet. The management goal for Zone I is maintaining it in a natural state, under control of the water supplier, with no potential sources of contamination. The Zone I areas for the public water supply wells have been established using the DEP "Recommended Wellhead Protection Area Zone I Delineation Methodology". The methodology requires three pieces of information to determine the Zone I radius: porosity of the producing formation, the open borehole interval, and the groundwater withdrawal rate. Wellhead Protection Zone II: The land that contributes groundwater to a pumping well or flowing spring is referred to as the capture zone, or the zone of diversion. Zone II is the surface representation of the capture zone. This area is delineated by a volume of water, in an aquifer, contributing to a well or spring. The Zone II delineations represent the volume of water entering the sources in a 10-year time of travel. In other words, groundwater that resides below the area identified as Zone II has a high probability of reaching the corresponding source in fewer than ten years. Wellhead Protection Zone III: The source water protection Zone III area, or zone of contribution, is the upgradient extent of the subbasin that can contribute water to the capture zones of the wells. It is determined from the upgradient extent of all watershed subbasins contributing water toward the sources, and supplemented using a particle-tracking algorithm within the groundwater flow model.

<purpose>To define Source Water Protection Zones A, B and C and Source Water Protection Zones I, II, and III for each drinking water source, in order to understand the area(s) contributing water resources toward each drinking water source, provide a basis for conducting a susceptibility analysis, and define management areas around each drinking water source.</purpose>

<idAbs>

Source Water Protection Area represents wellhead protection areas as delineated for public water suppliers who have an approved source water protection plan in Pennsylvania. The Source Water Protection Zones were delineated using the DEP Source Water Assessment and Protection guidance document. Wellhead Protection Zone I: The source water protection Zone I is the smallest of the three zones and is also the most stringent from a protection standpoint. Zone I is a circle around the well with a radius generally between 100 and 400 feet, or an offset radius for spring sources. The management goal for Zone I is maintaining it in a natural state, under control of the water supplier, with no potential sources of contamination. The Zone I areas for the public water supply wells and/ or springs have been established using the DEP "Recommended Wellhead Protection Area Zone I Delineation Methodology". Wellhead Protection Zone III: The source water protection Zone III area, or zone of contribution, is the upgradient extent of the subbasin that can contribute water to the capture zones of the wells or springs. It is determined from the upgradient extent of all watershed subbasins contributing water toward the sources, and may be supplemented using the results of a particle-tracking algorithm if a groundwater flow model was used to determine the contribution areas. Prepared June 2022.

</idAbs>
